Hello Band Boosters!
It has come to my attention that many of you are not familiar with the Chattanooga Ironman Competition and the role that the SDHS band plays in it. It is a competition that includes swimming, biking and running and has aid stations all along the course to assist the competitors as they pass by. Our band is in charge of a run aid station. That means that our station is set up with drinks, snacks, and other misc. "stuff" that we pass out to the runners as they go through our station. We also cheer them on, providing as much encouragement as we can as they are pretty well worn out by the time they get to us. There will be thousands of athletes participating so it is very important that we have enough volunteers on hand to take care of each of them as they pass by.
Also, the band earns money for our account by participating. We get a certain amount for every volunteer that signs up, with the opportunity to earn extra if our station wins an award for "most spirited" or "cleanest" station. Last year we won 2nd place overall earning us an extra $750 (?).
The band will alternate playing for the runners as they pass with actually serving them. The music really seems to help energize and motivate the runners, which is one of the reasons we are there! Our band theme this year will be The Blues Brothers, so we are asking the band members to wear a white button up shirt (short or long sleeve) with a black tie and black shorts or pants. Black sunglasses and black hats are optional. Other volunteers will be wearing the volunteer shirt provided by Ironman, which will be given out as you arrive for your shift.
I hope this answers most of your questions, but if you can think of anything that I haven't addressed please feel free to email me and I'll do my best to find out the answer.
Thank you in advance for volunteering!
